GCM Introduces Fully Automatic Adhesive Control for Solvent-Free Lamination
24 April
GCM presents an innovative and fully integrated system designed to automatically control and adjust the amount of adhesive used in solvent-free lamination processes. Developed entirely in-house and operational for over five years, this solution addresses one of the main challenges in the industry: precise adhesive grammage control.
Incorrect adhesive weight is a common cause of critical production defects such as orange peel, blisters, and telescopic winding. These issues are especially prevalent when processing high-barrier or metallized substrates at high speeds, and in the presence of specific inks.
With GCM’s system, the operator simply sets the desired adhesive grammage—either manually or using presets—and the machine automatically adjusts and maintains the target value throughout the job. The system also manages real-time mixing ratios, tracks component consumption, and activates alarm signals up to complete line stoppage in case of persistent errors.
A Market-Leading System, Without External IR Sensors
Unlike traditional systems that rely on expensive IR technology with wide tolerance ranges, GCM’s proprietary solution delivers precise, stable and cost-effective performance, offering multiple advantages:
- Elimination of optical issues such as orange peel, surface blisters, and skin effects
- No more telescopic winding due to uneven adhesive application
- Consistent grammage throughout the process, preventing variability over time
- Real-time ratio control, with alarms and machine shutdown for persistent misbalances
- Reliable adhesion strength across all runs
- Minimized production waste from inaccurate adhesive settings
In practical terms, for a transparent film structure where only 1.4 g/m² is needed, over-applying even slightly (e.g. 1.7 g/m²) increases costs without benefit. GCM’s system corrects this in seconds via the operator panel, maintaining ideal weights and preventing excess use.
Smart Adjustments for Gap and Tension
In addition, GCM offers an optional automatic micrometer gap adjustment feature (standard in HD models). This enables precise control of the dosing roller gap without manual feeler gauges, avoiding misalignments and protecting cylinder integrity.
Another intelligent automation is the preset tension control, where the operator selects material type, thickness and range via HMI. The machine then applies optimal tension settings to prevent curling and tunneling, improving material handling and product quality.
A Sustainable and Efficient Production Model
Environmental efficiency is also a priority. All Olympia SL, HD and Mustang machines use regenerative electronic systems that cut energy consumption to less than 2kW/h at full capacity. Standard features include automatic heat recirculation and recovery in the dryers, which significantly reduce the operational cost of drying organic and inorganic solvents.
Additionally, GCM is powered by its own photovoltaic park, making the company completely energy self-sufficient and reinforcing its commitment to sustainability.
